The Petzl TIKKA XP is at the cutting edge of high-output hands-free-lighting. Though it weighs just over 3 ounces, this headlamp still blasts out up to 35 lumens to a distance of up to 114 feet. It gives you a lot of flexibility in terms of lighting options, too. You get three different lighting levels (maximum, optimum, and economic) and two beam options (flood and spot) for short- and long-range illumination.

Plus, if you really need to see what’s making that growling noise way up ahead on the trail, it features a boost mode that increases output to 40 lumens for a 160-foot range beam (boost mode automatically shuts off after 20 seconds to conserve energy). And if you get lost running away from whatever was growling at you, it also includes an emergency strobe mode that makes you easy to locate.

The TIKKA XP will last up to 120 on the three included AAA batteries. If you do get toward the end of your charge, a battery level indicator lets you know when the batteries are 70% and 90% discharged. The Petzl TIKKA XP comes with a comfortable elastic headband and three AAA batteries. Three-year guarantee.–Josh Dettweiler

I have owned many Petzl headlamps, but this one is by far the best I have owned & used. Three easily found AAA batteries power this “lite” (weighs only 95g [3.35oz] including the batteries!) light and there is a nifty Green Orange Red indicator light on the side to help you determine how much battery life is left. New/fresh batteries & the indicator blinks green. After about 70% used/discharged the indicator turns orange. Finally, Red when 90% used and they need to be replaced. As an additional alert, the headlamp’s beam will blink momentarily when the indicator changes color. Speaking of batteries, I checked out Petzl USA Homepage and there is now a warning not to use Lithium batteries (especially their higher output during discharge) because they may cause the lamp to overheat and possibly damage the LEDs. There is a very functional light diffuser that allows the light to be spread; perfect for walking at night through the woods with a full pack on, or with the diffuser moved to the side, a pin point beam can be directed where you need the brightest of lighting. Battery life for the 3 lighting levels: maximum [60 hours], optimum [80 hours], economic, [120 hours] Water resistant for all-weather use. Buy this headlamp & you will not be disappointed.
